$200 million upgrade for bridge

Port Augusta’s Joy Baluch AM Bridge is an important transport link, providing access across the Spencer Gulf for commuter, commercial and freight vehicles. It is also a key tourist connection to the Eyre Peninsula, northern South Australia and beyond.

Recognising the need to improve safety and capacity of this critical road link, the Federal and South Australia governments have committed $200 million for the upgrade of the bridge.

The project will involve duplication of the bridge as well as widening the approach roads to allow for two lanes in both directions.

Currently in the concept planning and consultation phase, the project is expected to commence in early 2020 and be finished by mid-2021.

ICN Gateway currently has a number of work packages listed for the project, with expressions of interest closing mid-year.

‘At this stage, the packages listed are broad categories based on typical project requirements. We encourage local suppliers to register their interest in the work packages and we will send their information to the shortlisted tenderers when these are known. It’s a good way to get your details put in front of the potential contractor early in the process,’ ICN SA Supply Consultant Eddie Ivar said.

According to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure website, the duplication is expected to improve road safety and efficiency for all users, improve freight productivity and importantly improve the resilience of the major transport link.

It will also address the current bridge speed restrictions and safety for people walking or cycling across the bridge.

Packages include civil construction, labour hire, waste management, plant and equipment, traffic management and more.
