Top End gets Defence boost

ICN NT is working with the Department of Defence and Laing O’Rourke on a planned $472 million upgrade and redevelopment at Larrakeyah Barracks, and the construction of a new wharf and fuel farm to support naval operations in the Top End.

The scope includes two distinct projects under the one managing contract:

  • J0109 Larrakeyah Barracks Redevelopment (LBR)
  • N2238 Facilities to Support Naval Operations in the North (FSNON).

Built in 1932, and with minimal upgrades since, Larrakeyah Barracks is a strategically important base servicing the Royal Australian Navy, Army and Joint Task Force units in the Darwin Area.

The upgrade will address current deficiencies and infrastructure risks while providing for future growth requirement. It includes:

  • upgrades to a range of basewide infrastructure including electrical, potable water, fire-fighting, sewerage, stormwater and ICT
  • structures for a new shared-user facility, car parking and upgrades to the base entry precinct.

Meanwhile, the aim of the FSNON project is to provide fit for purpose facilities and infrastructure to support visiting Navy, offshore patrol vessels and foreign warships, and includes:

  • a new wharf for a range of vessels to safely re-supply and re-store
  • enhanced Defence fuel facilities to provide a 24/7 fuel storage and refueling services to Australian and foreign vessels.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2023.

ICN NT expects more progress on the project in the in the coming months and encourages local suppliers to express interest under “general updates” on the Gateway Page.
