Rail opportunities in Victoria

With stage 1 of the Shepparton Line upgrade now complete, Rail Project Victoria has chosen Coleman Rail, in partnership with KBR Inc as the preferred contractor to deliver Stage 2, which will allow new VLocity trains to travel to and from Shepparton for the first time.

The VLocity is the newest train in the V/Line fleet and has features such as mobile signal boosters for phone coverage and better accessibility for passengers with prams or mobility aids.

Stage 2 includes:

  • platform extensions at Mooroopna, Murchison East and Nagambie stations
  • a crossing loop extension near Murchison East to enable trains to pass each other
  • 59 level crossing upgrades between Donnybrook and Shepparton
  • stabling to house VLocity trains.

Once complete, there will be nine return services a day between Shepparton and Melbourne, with trains travelling at higher speeds.

ICNVIC Industry Adviser Grant Jennings said Rail Project Victoria engaged ICN early and an adviser was assigned to each of bidders.

With the preferred contractor announced, ICN will work with Coleman Rail and KBR to ensure local companies have access to opportunities.

Grant said there would be a virtual industry briefing in February. Coleman will give an overview of the project, and there will also be information about other regional projects and an opportunity to network virtually.

Work packages are expected to be listed on Gateway soon.

The Victorian Budget, handed down last month, included funding for stage 3 of the Shepparton Line Upgrade. This will be 9 weekday services to and from Melbourne, with trains travelling up to 130km/h.
