Upgrade for award-winning convention centre
The Queensland Government is investing $176 million into an upgrade of the Cairns Convention Centre, and Far North Queensland suppliers are set to benefit.
Lendlease has been appointed managing contractor and early works are set to start soon.
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said in a press release that he would be keeping a close eye on the project to ensure maximum local benefit.
“This project will create 570 fulltime jobs, and wherever possible we want Cairns-based carpenters, carpet-layers, painters, plumbers and electricians to get this work,” Mr Healy said.
ICN QLD is working with Lendlease in order to meet their obligations.
Although Expressions of interest in a range of packages closed earlier this year, others are still open through 2020.
ICN Qld consultant Abhi Arora said once the first and second tier contractors were appointed, there would be flow-on effects through the supply chain.
Work is expected to begin in the middle of this year and be completed by early 2022.
The centre opened in 1996 and won the World’s Best Congress Centre award in 2004 and 2014. The refurbishment of existing facilities and the expansion will add an extra square metres of meeting, banquet and exhibition space, overlooking Trinity Inlet.
