Northern New South Wales business are set to benefit with the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital on a greenfield site at Kingscliff, just south of Tweed Heads.

The $582 million Tweed Valley Hospital is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, and open for patients early 2023.

Nearly 350 local businesses have expressed interest in the project, with all work packages listed exclusively on ICN Gateway.

In December 2018, NSW Health announce Lendlease as the planning and early works contractor.

ICN NSW helped three companies during the tendering process - John Holland Group, CPB and Lendlease.

“To avoid possible probity issues we appointed different consultants to each one,” ICN’s Dusko Bajic said.

“Once Lendlease got the job, we established communication and met with them in January.

“At that meeting, we spoke about local industry participation, employment opportunities and training and upskilling local business and individuals.”

Works packages for the project will be released in two streams, with more than 60 currently listed on Gateway.

These include early works such as accommodation, scaffolding, concreting, temporary fencing and earthworks.

Lendlease has a genuine commitment to the Tweed-Byron community,” Dusko said.

“Local subcontractors and suppliers are encouraged to register their interest in participating in upcoming opportunities for Early Works trade packages and future Main Works packages.”

Local business Tweed Coast Demolition and Excavations has already been awarded a package of works for the demolition of a number of structures and site remediation.

In a press release, NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard said “This is just the beginning of a $582 million investment in health for the Tweed-Byron region. Local businesses and tradespeople spend the money they earn locally and that’s terrific news for the regional economy.”

Member for Tweed Geoff Provost said the construction of the new hospital would provide lasting benefits for the community, including boosting local industry participation and skills development.

“ICN will work with the contractors and subcontractors to develop local industry capability and ensure that Northern NSW businesses have the best possible chance of competing and winning work on this project and in the industry more broadly,” Mr Provest said.

The project consists of:

• Construction of a new major referral hospital to provide the health services that meet the needs of the growing population of the Tweed-Byron region.
• Master planning for additional health, education, training and research facilities needed to support these health services, developed with service partners over time.
• Delivery of the supporting infrastructure required for the new hospital, including greenspace and other amenity spaces, campus roads and car parking, external road upgrades and connections, utilities connections, and other site infrastructure. 

Once complete, the Tweed Valley Hospital will be the major referral hospital for the Tweed-Byron communities and will form the core of the region’s network of hospital and community health centres.

It will deliver:

• additional inpatient capacity
• an expanded emergency department
• enhanced surgical and ambulatory care services
• diagnostic and interventional cardiology
• an integrated cancer care service, including radiotherapy services.
